18 februar 1978 stod 14 menn og 1 kvinne på startstrekken til «Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon» i Honolulu. 3,8 km svømming, 180 km sykling og 42 km løping. Senere flyttet konkurransen til Kailua-Kona, men distansen og «hardheten» har vært den samme.
